Some studies have shown that having too many options to choose from is not always a good thing, but we reckon this doesn't apply to RVs and mobile homes, where manufacturers have to strive to deliver the most options for the same price range so that all customers get their ideal RV in the end. If you're of the same mind, you'll love this tiny teaser of things to come.

This is the Cube 440, a name that offers only two clues about its potential as the family-ready RV of the future: one is in regards to its boxy shape, while the "440" stands for its length of 4.4 meters or 14.5 feet. But its biggest secret is inside, where technology and design meet to create a habitat unlike anything else you can find on the market right now.

To be fair, it's not like you can head out to the closest dealership and get the Cube 440 today.

This is actually a prototype of a future travel trailer that Dutch company StarLight will import from China and adjust for the European market. The prototype was on display at the 2024 Dusseldorf Caravan Show in Germany so that the two partners, StarLight and maker Lidu RV, could gauge interest in such a towable.

The prototype is shown in the video tour at the bottom of the page, carrying only small differences from the model Lidu RV sells back home in China.

With a total length of 4.4 meters (14.5 feet), Cube 440 has a total mass of just 1,800 kg (3,968 lbs) and rides on a single-axle trailer. Its boxy shape means that it won't be as aerodynamic as its more compact sibling that StarLight also brought to Dusseldorf and we covered in a separate piece, the Aqulia 360. But it does offer advantages in terms of space and comfort.

For starters, the Cube 440 can sleep as many as four adults in what is still essentially a compact footprint, offering seats for them at the dining table and a compact galley that will have to make do in terms of prepping the meals that will be served there.

The layout is fairly standard for a trailer of this size, with the dinette at one end and the bedroom at the other, and the kitchen and bathroom sandwiched in the middle. What stands out about the Cube 440 is the elegant design, the smart features, and what StarLight promises to be excessive attention to detail, which should ultimately translate into a high-end product they hope to sell at mid-level pricing.

That becomes apparent in the smart control system with voice controls, the self-tinting glass, the air filtration system, power windows all around, and leather seats with climate control. The Cube 440 might be presented like a family trailer, but the seats in the dinette seem better suited for formal business meetings than a dinette where kids could potentially spill foods or color with crayons on them.

For its compact size, the Cube 440 also provides ample storage options, both inside and outside. There's storage under the bed, a wardrobe right next to it, and overhead cubbies in the dinette; then, you get a storage box on the tongue of the trailer and exterior storage.

The kitchen is compact but specced with the basics: a medium sink, an electric cooktop, a medium-sized fridge, and some storage for essentials. A diesel cooker on a slide-out tray outside doubles as a barbecue spot.

The bathroom is even smaller but still decent in terms of what it offers: a shower, a cassette toilet, a single-piece sink with integrated storage, and even a small medicine cabinet.

Like its more compact sibling, the Cube 440 also has a stainless steel and aluminum body built by automotive standards, which renders it more durable and stable than other travel trailers. Theoretically, this would also allow them to build the same kind of trailer on a much longer wheelbase, should customers ask for even more space.

Features on the current wheelbase also include insulation, heat and AC, an electric awning with wind sensor, a solar array that could run all appliances inside (400Ah battery, 3,000W inverter, and 500W of solar cells on the roof), a 100-liter (26.4-gallon) tank for freshwater, and a 50-liter (13.2-gallon) tank for gray.

StarLight's Marcin Krawczyk tells autoevolution that all units they had on display at Dusseldorf, including the Cube 440 shown below, are prototypes, which is why he won't even entertain a guesstimate on pricing.

Mr. Krawczyk underlines that the goal of this year's appearance was to gather feedback from other industry players and potential customers so they can fine-tune the prototypes before heading into production. On the bright side, he believes that all details should be finalized by early March 2025, which could mean we'd get a 2026 model later next year.
